Llanberis Lake Railway - A nostalgic steam train at the foot of Snowdon

The Llanberis Lake Railway is a picturesque narrow gauge railway that runs along the beautiful Llyn Padarn in North Wales. It offers a unique opportunity to experience the stunning landscape of Snowdonia National Park from a historic steam locomotive. The route takes you through a fascinating mix of Welsh industrial history, spectacular nature, and breathtaking views of Wales' highest mountain, Snowdon.

The history of Llanberis Lake Railway
The current railway largely follows the former Padarn Railway, which was originally built in the 19th century to transport slate from the nearby Dinorwic Slate Mines to the port in Port Dinorwic. This slate industry was a central part of the Welsh economy, and the railway played a crucial role in transporting the valuable slate blocks to the coast, from where they were exported worldwide.

After the mines closed in 1969, the original railway line was decommissioned. However, instead of dismantling the tracks, the Llanberis Lake Railway was established in 1971, reviving a portion of the old route – this time for tourism purposes. Today, visitors can enjoy a nostalgic ride along the lake and experience a piece of Welsh industrial history.

The route and the driving experience
The Llanberis Lake Railway runs along Llyn Padarn, a glacier lake surrounded by mountains, forests, and historical sites. The entire route spans approximately 5 kilometers and passes through some of the most beautiful landscapes in North Wales.

Highlights of the journey include:
- Views of Snowdon - Wales' highest mountain majestically overlooks the lake, providing an impressive backdrop.
- Lakeside drive - The train follows the natural shape of Llyn Padarn, offering beautiful views of the calm water and surrounding hills.
- Historical sites of the slate industry - Remnants of the Dinorwic Slate Mines, including old quarries, worker houses, and mining facilities, are visible along the route.
- The old Gilfach Ddu station platform - This station was once the industrial center of the region and now houses the National Slate Museum.

The route begins and ends in Llanberis, a charming town that is a popular starting point for hikes in Snowdonia National Park.

The locomotives and trains
The Llanberis Lake Railway is particularly known for its historic steam locomotives, lovingly restored. Many of these engines originate from the former slate mines and were specifically built for use on narrow-gauge tracks.

Some of the most famous locomotives include:
- "Dolbadarn" - A steam locomotive that operated in the Dinorwic Slate Mines and was named after one of the nearby castles.
- "Elidir" - A historic locomotive named after the mountain Elidir Fawr, beneath which the former mines extend.

The authentically restored locomotives and carriages give passengers the feeling of stepping back into a bygone era of railway travel.

Nature and scenery along the route
The Llanberis Lake Railway passes through some of the most beautiful landscapes in Snowdonia National Park. During the journey, visitors can enjoy spectacular views of:
- Llyn Padarn - The large glacier lake whose clear water blends perfectly with the surrounding landscape.
- The wooded hills and valleys - The route passes through ancient oak forests and green meadows, offering a different color palette in every season.
- Welsh wildlife - With luck, passengers may spot herons, cormorants, otters, and red kites along the route.

Historical significance of the slate industry
The Llanberis region was once one of the most important slate mining areas in the world. The Dinorwic Mine operated for centuries, supplying slate for roofs in Britain and beyond.

The railway is closely tied to this history, recalling the hard work of slate workers who labored under often challenging conditions. Many of the buildings and structures visible along the route date back to the heyday of slate mining and speak to the former industrial importance of the region.

The National Slate Museum
A special highlight that pairs perfectly with a train ride is a visit to the National Slate Museum, located in a former workshop complex of the Dinorwic Mine. Here, visitors can learn more about the hard work of slate workers, view historical machinery, and even experience a demonstration of traditional slate processing.

Experiences for visitors
The Llanberis Lake Railway offers numerous activities and experiences for visitors of all ages:
- Rides on the steam train, providing a nostalgic feeling.
- Lakeside picnics, with stunning views of the mountains.
- Visits to the National Slate Museum to learn more about the slate industry.
- Hiking along the lakeshore to experience nature up close.
- Photographing the spectacular landscape, especially the reflections in Llyn Padarn.

Best time to take a ride
The train operates year-round, but the rides are especially beautiful:
- In spring, when flowers bloom on the lakeshore.
- In summer, when the sun bathes the landscape in vibrant colors.
- In autumn, when the forests glow in gold and red hues.
- In winter, when the peaks of Snowdonia are covered in snow.

Conclusion
The Llanberis Lake Railway is a wonderful way to experience the spectacular landscape of North Wales in a unique way. The historic steam train combines industrial history, stunning nature, and a nostalgic driving experience into an unforgettable journey.

Whether as part of a family trip, for railway enthusiasts, or for nature lovers - this ride along Llyn Padarn is a real highlight for every visitor to Snowdonia and a perfect combination of history and nature.

A very beautiful trip around the lake and in contrast to the mountain railway, this one is dog-friendly. The staff were all very friendly and tickets were reasonably priced for the length of journey. We stopped at a couple of station on the return journey which was a pleasant surprise. There are small play areas for children and a cafe at one station. We went on the first train of the day (11am I believe) and despite not booking there was plenty of space.

Worth a visit. A small but mighty train ride with the bonus of the Slate museum on the way. Unfortunately this will be closing for some essential refurb works so check before travelling

This place is incredible. Just like going back in time. Some machinery still working, even the blacksmith working was a real person. Free entry too. I’m not too big on museums but so glad I went.

An interesting and very picturesque train journey in the heart of the Snowdonia (Eryi) National Park and is also one of most picturesque, relaxing and idyllic of any train journeys in Wales. Although the attraction is wedged in the same general area of the more renowned attractions such as The National Slate Museum and Snowdon Mountain Railway it more than punches above its weight and offers more relaxing and pleasant alternative. The ticket price for the Journey is £10.50 for Adults, which is very reasonable in comparison to other railway journeys in Wales and the rest of the UK. The journey itself lasts approx. 1 hour and runs along Padarn Lake, which is part of The Padarn Lake Country Park and the views along are some of the spectacular and picturesque of any train journey in Wales where you can see the breathtaking and beautiful mountains of Snowdonia and blended in with Padarn Lake make it all the more breathtaking, beautiful and spectacular. Visitors can enjoy their journey on one of three main steam locomotive, which are all Hunslet engines and they are 'Elidir', 'Thomas Bach' & 'Dolbadarn' and all of which are in fabulous magnificent condition. The journey stops for breaks at different point including Cei Llydan where you can in Padarn Lake and Snowdonia Mountains a little bit more. At the Gilfach Ddu stop there is an informative interesting information display about the history of the line. There is a cafe on site selling a small range of food and drink at reasonable prices and there is a gift shop selling a nice range of souvenirs at reasonable prices. Overall this is a delightful and fabulous place to visit and makes for a relaxing and pleasant day out with a great and picturesque train journey to boot.

Extremely disappointing experience at this location. The ticket salesperson was not only rude but also displayed discriminatory behavior. Despite my friend being a blue badge holder with limited mobility, we were denied access to a chair during heavy rain and were met with hostility and verbal threats. This behavior made us feel unsafe and unwelcome. It’s shocking to encounter such unprofessionalism and lack of basic customer service at a tourist spot. However, the staff on the train were kind and helpful, which was the only positive aspect of our visit. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this place and will not be returning. Taking a walk around the lake safely would be more than enough.

Great Scenic Journey around the lakeside that lasted an hour! It was only £30 for a family of 4 which I thought was very cheap. The Gift Shop is full of Welsh Souvenirs and of course Ice Cream and the Cafe is well stocked full of cakes and pasties with a good selection of hot and cold meals. Staff are friendly and are willing to help. The cafe is cheap and the food is very good quality. I would highly recommend Llanberis Lake Railway as a place to visit it’s a great scenic tour with views looking over towards a beautiful village!

Nice train ride alongside the lake. Very reasonable price. Dog friendly. Staff were nice and friendly. Llanberis is beautiful. Well worth it if only for the drive there through the mountains.
